What is hentai?

Hentai is a broad genre of Japanese pornographic fiction. The stories are told through drawings: in some cases in the form of manga comics and in other cases in the form of audiovisual cartoons (called anime).

The word hentai in Japanese means perversion or transformation. One can find all kinds of fetishes in works of this genre.

Hentai manga includes a wide variety of subgenres depending on their subject matter or the particular characteristics of the protagonists. In addition to the specific subgenres of hentai, there are often crossovers with other major genres such as sci-fi, fantasy or detective.

History of hentai

Although nudity appeared in Japanese graphic stories (manga) as early as the 1960s, the first animated productions sold as hentai, i.e. as a pornographic product intended for adult audiences, appeared in the 1970s, such as Cybele or Cream Lemon by Azuma Hideo.

Hentai as a genre first appeared as animation and then developed as graphic stories.
Hentai is available in two formats:

Manga. Manga is the Japanese comic book. It differs from Western comics in that the pages are read from left to right. It was originally a printed book or magazine, but is now available in digital format.
Vivid. These are cartoons with stylistic features similar to manga, but with less detail. This is because the amount of time the anime viewer does not have to observe the image is much less than that of the manga viewer.
Manga and anime are not exclusive formats for hentai, but they also exist in other genres of works such as adventure, historical or romantic fiction.
